Zealandia

The world's first urban eco sanctuary in the heart of Wellington, centred around the picturesque Karori reservoir. The pest free fence has allowed many birds,reptiles and plantlife to thrive, including tuatara,takahe,kaka and kakariki. Come for a walk amongst the Bush and do some birdspotting. Wellington Chocolate Factory and Havana Roastery

What could be better than coffee and chocolate? See organic chocolate produced from ethically traded single origin beans with unique flavours.  Havana's first in New Zealand hot air roastery also uses fair trade beans and has been so successful that the coffee is now sold throughout NZ. Coffee is of course a Wellington necessity

Wellington Zoo

Come visit New Zealand's first zoo - of course in Wellington! The Zoo runs a number of LEOTC sessions for schools including animal adaptations and human evolution. See https://wellingtonzoo.com.

Weta Workshop

The famous Weta Workshop! Get a guided tour through the practical effects crafted for The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia, Avatar and much more! Includes a private screening of Weta’s exclusive behind-the-scenes documentary, followed by creating our own fake blood!

Matiu/Somes Island

In the middle of the picturesque Wellington harbour, the island has been used as a station for both human and animal quarrantine, along with an internment camp during WWI and WWII.  It is the site on NZ’s first inner harbour lighthouse and is now a predator free scientific and historic reserve.

Space Place/Cable Car Museum

See the history behind Wellington’s iconic cable car (take a ride if you like, at your own cost).  Visit Space Place at Carter Observatory, a popular venue for EOTC.

Wellington Museum/City Gallery/Te Papa

Learn about the history of Wellington, especially the maritime and waterfront. Then be inspired  and challenged by the contemporary installations in the City Gallery. Finally spend some time at the Museum of NZ, Te Papa Tongarewa, our “container of treasures”.

National Library/Parliament

Visit the centre-point of our democracy. Where possible the guided tour will take you to the Banquet Hall, Parliamentary House, Debating Chamber, Legislative Council Chamber (LCC), Grand Hall, Parliamentary Library, Walk through the Galleria, Select Committee Rooms and The Base Isolators.  

Take a tour of the National Library. Come hear the story of Te Ahumairangi, the sacred mountain of Wellington’s Mana Whenua, which they have given its name to the ground floor of the National Library. See the latest exhibition in the Turnbull Gallery and view the Treaty of Waitangi and suffrage documents.

VUW Spectrophotometry

Take a trip to Victoria University and explore spectrophotometry methods and their importance in analysis.  Applicable to Year 13 Chemistry.
